Creating an inspiring outdoor reading area for Stoke Prior First School.
Stoke Prior First School is situated in the village of Stoke Prior near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire and has approximately 150 pupils on roll between the ages of 4-9.
As part of their ongoing review of reading across the school, the leadership team identified that while there were well-equipped indoor reading areas, there were further opportunities to promote reading outside, particularly in the EYFS area.
For Headteacher Leigh Satchwell, the main objective was to create an outdoor space where reading books could be stored safely and securely but most importantly, easily accessible to all pupils.
“We hoped to create a space where children could sit or lie to read and enjoy the books. We wanted a space that looked appealing and comfortable.” explains Leigh.
“The new space became an instant hit, attracting children during break times and after school and teachers have already observed an increase in voluntary reading activities. Children are now choosing to access the reading provision independently, even those who were previously reluctant readers.”

In 2023, BookSpace launched a brand-new range of outdoor library furniture products to provide children with additional, engaging reading environments which would complement indoor libraries and classroom book corners.
This range includes a mix of freestanding single-sided and double-sided bookcases, wall display, cosy reading nooks and soft-seating as well as our best-selling Reading Shed – a mini outdoor library with lockable doors, storage and lots of face-book display.
Using a variety of products from the outdoor range, the BookSpace team set about creating an inviting and innovative space which would encourage children to engage in reading outside.
The furniture was positioned just outside the EYFS classrooms to give young readers direct access to the books and add a sense of excitement and discovery.
Literacy studies show that facilitating positive experiences around books at a young age is key to developing confident, lifelong readers through to adulthood.
That’s why all of our library furniture, indoor and outdoor, is designed to present books to children in a fun and engaging way.
Accessible shelving, face-out display, cosy reading nooks and comfy seating all work together to draw children in and tempt them to pick up a book and read.
“The outdoor furniture has very much helped us achieve our aims to promote reading. The Reading Shed is attractive, practical, secure and easily accessible. The Hideout and outdoor floor cushions all help create an attractive area with a clear focus on reading.” says Leigh.
The introduction of the outdoor reading space has had a significant impact on the children’s attitudes towards reading. The new space became an instant hit, attracting children during break times and after school and teachers have already observed an increase in voluntary reading activities.
Children are now choosing to access the reading provision independently, even those who were previously reluctant readers have begun to show more interest in books.
“Children also regularly request that adults read stories in the area and once a story has started, other children join in quickly.” says Leigh. “Creating areas around the school for outdoor reading also raises the profile of reading to staff. As a school that ‘puts reading at the heart of the curriculum’, it is important that we promote the enjoyment of reading to everyone wherever we can.”
