The furniture was positioned just outside the EYFS classrooms to give young readers direct access to the books and add a sense of excitement and discovery.

Literacy studies show that facilitating positive experiences around books at a young age is key to developing confident, lifelong readers through to adulthood.

That’s why all of our library furniture, indoor and outdoor, is designed to present books to children in a fun and engaging way.

Accessible shelving, face-out display, cosy reading nooks and comfy seating all work together to draw children in and tempt them to pick up a book and read.

“The outdoor furniture has very much helped us achieve our aims to promote reading. The Reading Shed is attractive, practical, secure and easily accessible. The Hideout and outdoor floor cushions all help create an attractive area with a clear focus on reading.” says Leigh.

The introduction of the outdoor reading space has had a significant impact on the children’s attitudes towards reading. The new space became an instant hit, attracting children during break times and after school and teachers have already observed an increase in voluntary reading activities.

Children are now choosing to access the reading provision independently, even those who were previously reluctant readers have begun to show more interest in books.

“Children also regularly request that adults read stories in the area and once a story has started, other children join in quickly.” says Leigh. “Creating areas around the school for outdoor reading also raises the profile of reading to staff. As a school that ‘puts reading at the heart of the curriculum’, it is important that we promote the enjoyment of reading to everyone wherever we can.”
